Day 1: Arrival in Melbourne

There are several direct flights from the UK to Melbourne. On arrival at the airport you’ll be met by our driver and transferred directly to your accommodation. If you’re arriving in Melbourne by car during your self-drive holiday simply make your own way to your hotel. You can always hire a satellite navigation system if you’re a bit wary about finding your way in the city.

Melbourne has an interesting mix of historic and modern buildings. It’s also one of the most multicultural cities in Australia, with Greek, Turkish, Chinese and Italian districts. If you’ve been travelling in Australia for a while and fancy a change from the barbie, you’ll be spoilt for choice with the foreign cuisine on offer here. Your hotel is located south of the Yarra River that flows through the heart of the city.

Day 2: Melbourne

Over the next two days you explore the city at your own pace. If you’ve got money to burn you can shop to your heart’s content in the many shopping malls and stylish boutiques. A central focal point of Melbourne is Federation Square (Fed Square). In 1997 an international design competition was held for the design of the square. The result is a striking, somewhat controversial complex of buildings. It’s fascinating place to look around and soak up the atmosphere. Across from the square, in stark contrast lies the gothic-style St Pauls Cathedral, dating back to the 19th century.

Melbourne is the sports capital of Australia. Australians are sports crazy, and you’ll have trouble finding a pub in the city that doesn’t show live games on a big screen. True sports fans can visit Australia’s shrine of sport the ‘G (Melbourne Cricket Ground). The venue is home to some of the country’s largest sports events and major test matches. Next door to the ‘G lies Melbourne Park, home of the Australian Open and swimming and athletics events. As part of your own Melbourne sightseeing tour, check out which games are on during your visit. Whether it’s cricket, rugby or Australian football visiting a local match is an unforgettable Melbourne experience.
