Kangaroo Island adventure - kangaroo

Kangaroo Island safari

This Kangaroo Island adventure is one of our most popular trips starting in Adelaide, especially if you enjoy hiking and trekking. One of the highlights of our Kangaroo Island adventure is spotting indigenous Australian animals in their natural habitat. The island (150 x 30km!) is located 120km south of Adelaide and actually resembles the Galapagos Islands. You'll find unique flora and fauna here, since there has never been any hunting or infestations of rabbits, foxes or dingos (a verifiable plague on the mainland). Since the island is filled with sandy roads and large distances to cover, our pre-arranged safaris are the best way to experence the island. Instead of taking the same route back, we've chosen to add a short domestic flight to the end of this trip... it's slightly more pricey, but worth the saved time.

Day 1: Adelaide - Kangaroo Island

Includes: Lunch, dinner

This morning, you'll leave your hotel in Adelaide at 6:45 for the beginning of your Kangaroo Island adventure. It should only take you about 1.5 hours to cover the 105km to Cape Jarvis on the Fleurie Peninsula by ferry. From there, you'll take a 30-minute ferry to Penneshaw, the harbour on Kangaroo Island. As soon as you arrive on the island, your safari begins! You'll start off in search of wallabies and the rare, endangered Glossy Black Parrot at Hogs Bay. Depending on the season you'll also see dolphins, seals and even whales. Lunch will be served at Browns Beach and afterwards you'll visit the bay at Pennington. After you climb Prospect Hill you'll have an incredible panoramic view of the island.

Later on you'll travel to Stokes Bay to take a walk through a limestone tunnel to a secluded tropical beach on the other side. When the weather is fair, this is a great place for a swim. Next, it's time to head to the Rocky River to do some koala spotting. Naturally, you'll also see the kangaroos that the island is named after as well as Cape Barren geese (see picture). Finally you'll visit the 'Remarkable Rocks' of granite and Admirals Arch, with its colony of New Zealand fur seals. You'll spend the first night of your Kangaroo Island adventure on a real Australian farm.

Kangaroo Island - Walking sanddunes

Day 2: Kangaroo Island - Adelaide
Includes: Breakfast and lunch

Today you'll start out early with one of the most enjoyable bushwalks you can take on the island. The bushwalk will take you to Hanson Bay, on the south side of the island. The Hanson Bay sanctuary is the best place to spot large numbers of koalas in the wild. During the bushwalk you'll be surrounded by breathtaking panoramic views and, as a reward at the end of your walk, you can go for a swim at one of the remote beaches. You'll go on to explore the white 'walking' sand dunes (the reference to 'Little Sahara' is slightly exaggerated) and you'll visit Seal Bay to meet the rare Aussie sea lions. The colony is made up of approximately 600 of these rare animals of which usually about 100 at a time are lounging on the beach. Accompanied by rangers, you'll be able to approach them up to a distance of about 5 metres. After lunch you'll drive to Vivonne Bay, where fishermen catch crabs and where you'll actually see small penguins walking around. Afterwards you'll be driven to the airport for your flight to Adelaide which should arrive at about 19:30 for the end of your Kangaroo Island adventure.
