Kakadu National Park tour - Mary River

Jim Jim dirt road trip

Kakadu National Park tour

This 3 day Kakadu National Park tour will take you to an area filled with crocodiles, brooks and mangroves - home to rugged rangers in cowboy hats. You'll travel by 4x4 from Darwin to the giant termite hills at Litchfield and Kakadu National Park. You'll sail across the silent waters of the Mary River, in search of crocs and the holy town of Ubirr. You'll also learn about the legends behind Aboriginal rock drawing. Your guide will tell you what it's like for them in modern day Australia. If you travel during the right season, you'll also visit the spectacular Jim Jim and Twin Falls, deep in Kakadu territory. These particularly impressive waterfalls are considered to be the highlight of our Kakadu National Park tour by many travellers. We were amazed by the towering termite hills in Litchfield and we also went for a swim through the vines hanging near the many waterfalls. You'll camp in basic yet clean tents for 4 people, but you can request a double tent for a surcharge of £61. This can be much more comfortable, especially from December to May when it tends to rain more.

Day 1: Darwin - Litchfield - Mary River

Includes: Lunch/Dinner

At around 7:00, you'll head for the plunging waterfalls at Litchfield National Park. You'll have plenty of time to see the Florence Falls, the Buley Rockhole and the enormous, red clay, magnetic termite hills. At Mary River, you'll trade in your truck for a small boat and take a spectacular cruise through the Mary River Wetlands System, the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere. You'll come across unique flora and see quite a few crocodiles, lovingly referred to as 'salties’ by locals. The cool rainforest, scattered with a great number of billabongs, is home to a wide variety of animals. The area is well known for being a great place to fish for the typical Australian ‘barramundi’. You'll undoubtedly, find this fish on your plate before the end of your trip. At the Point Stuart Wilderness lodge, you can take a hike through the monsoon forest. You'll dine and spend the night at Point Stuart.

Day 2: Mary River - Kakadu National Park tour

Includes: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Point Stuart has quite an illustrious history. In 1862, John McDouall Stuart ended his exploration of the Australian continent here. It was also base camp for many generations of buffalo and crocodile hunters. These days the area is very well protected. This morning you'll start off with a trip to Ubirr Rock where you can enjoy the spectacular view of the flood plains of Arnhem Land. Aboriginal history goes back an incredible 25,000 years here. The varying landscapes and traditions of the past can be found in the rock-art on the rock walls. On Day 2 of our Kakadu National Park tour, you'll drive through the tropical lowlands to the Barramundi gorge. You'll go on a trek to the top of the gorge and you can also go for a swim in one of the rock holes created by erosion. You'll spend the night at the permanent camp in Kakadu National Park.

Day 3: Kakadu - Darwin

Includes: Breakfast and lunch

Today, you'll travel to the Mamukala Wetlands and to Jim Jim Falls, both located in a fabulously beautiful area, deep in Kakadu National Park. You'll be able to walk as far as the base of the falls; all the while you'll be surrounded by the beauty of nature. After lunch, you'll sail to the more remote Twin Falls. Your reward is being able to enjoy majestic waterfalls whilst getting a beautiful tan on a river bank beach. Sometime in the afternoon, you'll travel back to Darwin where your Kakadu National Park tour ends at around 19:30 - 20:30. After spending the night in Darwin (excluded from the price of this module) you can continue travelling by domestic flight to Cairns or to Brisbane for our Rainforest and reef drive.

Seasons

From December to May (depending on the weather, which is unpredictable), during the tropical summer, the programme of our Kakadu National Park tour wil be adjusted, since the Jim Jim and Twin Falls are closed due to poor roads conditions at this time of year. The main advantage of travelling to the park during this time of year is that the park attracts fewer tourists and is therefore very quiet. It's important to note that Twin Falls are located on Aboriginal land. The boat service to the falls is run by Aboriginals, who can at any time decide to close the falls.
