Hong Kong (& Lantau island)

Hong Kong was a British Colony until it was handed back to China in 1997, and although much has changed there is still a strong British influence. Hong Kong streets are lined with display cases filled with the strangest looking food, but if you step outside of the busy inner city you'll also find quiet little fishing villages on Hong Kong Island.

Once you've checked in and settled in, take the Star Ferry around Kowloon, and you can enjoy a free harbour cruise. Aberdeen Harbour and the view from Victoria Peak are two highlights not to be missed. You can also stay on Lantau Island, which is quieter than the main island, and has beaches. In the evenings try fantastic food, drink in the coolest bars, and finish with one of the hip nightclubs or many Karaoke bars. Click here for more information on accommodation in Hong Kong during Australia flight stopovers.

Singapore

This city has a little bit of everything, from Chinatown with its typical markets, to the original facades of Little India, Arab street with it's temples and colourful streets packed with silk traders. One of the best things about Singapore is the food and drink. Singapore can offer everything from cheap to chic, from western to true Singaporean, in an Eastern ambiance that's almost unrivalled. If you want to relax and have some fun, head for Sentosa island with its beaches, amusement parks and entertainment. Make sure you check out the Night Safari, it's really a unique experience.

The award-winning Changi airport is 20 minutes drive from downtown Singapore. A transfer will be waiting for you upon your arrival at the airport. You can choose from two different hotels: one charming, characteristic 3-star mid-class hotel or a more luxurious 4-star hotel with swimming pool. Prices may vary during national holidays, school holidays and major conferences in Singapore. Click here for more information on accommodation in Singapore during Australia flight stopovers.

Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur, the cosmopolitan capital of Malaysia is certainly worth a stopover. It's a city of extremes: from cluttered streets with a Chinese ambiance and colourful Indian shops to the most modern buildings imaginable. Whilst in "KL" take the lift to the observation deck of the Petronas Towers, still the highest twin towers in the world, but how much longer? And then there’s also the neo-colonial, Anglo-Moorish style train station, the ultra-modern Masjid Negara mosque and the surprising contrast, interlaced between the high rise buildings, the small streets and kampongs where the pace of life is quite a bit slower.

You'll be spoiled for choice when it comes to eating in KL. Malaysian satay and excellent fish-head soup compete with plenty of cheap fast-food restaurants (if you not feeling so adventurous). If you've got time how about a day trip to Malacca, a lovely city with fantastic old Dutch ruins.
